Workshop Title : Bronchoscopic therapies for COPD – valid or voodoo? What the non-interventionalist needs to know.

Date: Saturday 24th March at 8.30am - 12.30pm

Description: There are increasing bronchoscopic options for patients with advanced emphysema. Termed endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR), many of these techniques are available in Australian centres. Whilst the interventional pulmonologists have embraced these technologies, there remains a degree of healthy scepticism within the broader respiratory community. Though techniques vary, the general goal is lung volume reduction (LVR), akin to surgical LVR but without the attendant morbidity. A number of pivotal trials have been published in the last 5 years and recommendations to consider such procedures have been incorporated into the 2017 GOLD Guidelines. This workshop aims to bring the non-interventional respiratory physician up to speed with the latest literature on this subject, describe the state of bronchoscopic lung volume reduction in Australia and stream a live case demonstration of an ELVR procedure.

Workshop Outcomes: Participants will be able to thoroughly assess severe COPD patients for non-pharmacological interventions as well as network with IP physicians and establish where these procedures are available.

Participants: This will be of interest to Respiratory Physicians managing patients with severe COPD who are seeking further professional development regarding non-pharmacological and non-rehabilitation management options for their patients

Workshop Title: Self-management interventions in chronic respiratory disease

Date : Friday 23rd March at 1.00pm – 5.00pm

Course Description: In this course, we will provide an overview of the evidence and applicability of self-management interventions in patients with respiratory diseases, particularly those with COPD. Besides discussing the content (definition) of, and evidence for, self-management interventions and different intervention components in the respiratory disease population, we will focus on 1) the use of behavioural change techniques; 2) the use of tele-health devices; 3) quality control, and 4) Advance Care Planning and breathlessness.

Course outcomes: At the end of the workshop we expect participants will be able to:
1. Summarise the latest evidence of self-management interventions in patients with chronic respiratory disease.
2. Recall recommendations regarding the use of behaviour change techniques within self-management interventions.
3. Describe the application of telehealth in education and self-management, and detail the principles of education in underpinning development of self-management.
4. Identify effective evaluation processes for self-management interventions, and formulate quality control strategies which can be implemented following patient interventions.
5. Detail factors that contribute to more effective advance care planning and management of breathlessness in people with COPD.

Target audience: Potential participants for the proposed workshop are clinicians and researchers in medicine, nursing and allied health. The topic of the workshop is an area of interest of members of the following TSANZ SIGs:

Workshop Title: The Future of MBW: Clinical applications in adult and paediatric respiratory disease

Date: Saturday 24th March at 8.30am - 12:00pm

Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre

Description: This course aims to provide attendees with an understanding of the basic physiological principles and current state of standardisation for the multiple breath washout technique (MBW). It will discuss how this non-invasive and easy to administer test can be used as an exciting novel adjunct in the diagnosis and management of obstructive airways diseases in clinical (and research)  pulmonary practice. It will also outline the limitations of the technique and conditions where utility may be less. The graduate course will include the opportunity for practical MBW measurement demonstrations from manufacturers. It will outline approaches to interpretation /application of results in clinical practice.

Course Outcomes: - Participants will gain an understanding of the physiology behind MBW  - Participants will gain an understanding on the current status of standardisation for both the technique and commercial devices across adult and paediatric age ranges. - Participants will be able to see and experience how an MBW measurement is administered - Participants will gain insight into how MBW can be used within important respiratory conditions, outlining not only the useful scenarios but also scenario/conditions where MBW is likely to be not useful. These will be reinforced in the final sessions where real life clinical data will be discussed as cases and a closing discussion will focus on how close the technique is to incorporation in the clinic.

Target audience: This course will appeal to respiratory researchers, clinicians and trainees, as well as respiratory scientists. It may also appeal to Physiotherapists and research nurses.

We are pleased to announce the TSANZ Advanced Trainees course in 2018 will focus on respiratory infectious disease. Speakers will include infectious diseases and respiratory physicians from around Australia and will cover a wide range of topics including: microbiology tools for respiratory infection, fungal and mycobacterial disease, pneumonia and bronchiectasis. There will be opportunities for case based discussions. We are excited to announce that Prof David Hui, from Hong Kong will be speaking on his own experiences managing viral respiratory pandemics including SARS and MERS. A complete programme will be available in the near future.

Cochrane Systematic Reviews Post Graduate Workshop

Date: Saturday 24th March at 10.30am – 12.30pm

This workshop is useful for people currently doing or actively considering doing a Cochrane review and will cover:
•   Common author errors in systematic review production,
•   New Tool for assessing Risk of Bias in studies,
•   How to understand/when to do Network Meta-analysis and Diagnostic Test Accuracy systematic reviews.
